Kapa Making

Hawaiian Cultural Art of Kapa Making

Learn the ancient art of Kapa making with Kumu (teacher) Page Chang of Pūkoʻa Studios.

During this Kapa experience, you are invited to learn the basics of the art of Kapa Making as the Kula Kapa Waimānalo team uses traditional methods to teach you how to process Hawaiian Wauke trees, or Paper Mulberry, into Mo‘omo‘o, a fibrous material that is the precursor to actual Hawaiian Kapa. The workshops take place in the open air Kamani grove at iconic Sea Life Park at Kaopō, overlooking Mānana and Kāohikaipu Islands.

All demonstrations will be in the Kamani Grove, behind the Hawaiian Reef Exhibit/near the Keiki Playground. Mark your calendars:

  • Sunday, June 1 - 10am - 2:30pm | Keiki Sunday Mālama Kai - World Reef Day
  • Thursday, June 19 - 10am - 2:30pm

Manō (Shark) Week - July 21 - 27

Learn All About Sharks

The whitetip reef shark — manō lālākea — is a powerful and graceful resident of our reef ecosystem. With their sleek bodies and distinctive white-tipped fins, these sharks are revered in Hawaiian culture and often associated with protection and guidance. Unlike many other sharks, the whitetip reef shark can rest still on the ocean floor, a behavior rarely seen in other species. They play a vital role in keeping reef communities in balance.

During our Manō (Shark) Week celebration, join us to learn how the manō contributes to ocean health and how we can mālama (care for) our marine ʻohana.
