Coming up: Sea Life Park will be home to Kapa Making, Art in the Park, Weekend Whale Watching, and our next Keiki Sunday - Malama Kai celebrating World Reef Day!
We hope to see you in the park soon!
Learn the ancient art of Kapa making with Kumu (teacher) Page Chang of Pūkoʻa Studios.
Kapa is the traditional fabric of Hawaiʻi. It is made primarily from the paper mulberry, called "wauke." Wauke is grown and harvested locally in Hawaiʻi. The outer bark of the stalk is stripped and the baste, or inner bark, is peeled, pounded over a rock with a tool, and set in water to ferment. Hand-carved wooden tools are used to soften and smooth the bark into a cloth, then dried to create fabric for use in clothing, artwork, adornments, and more.
Participate in this free cultural workshop, offered every month at no additional cost to Sea Life Park Annual Passholders, and as part of the parkʻs general admission ticket. Guests who participate will get to make and take a piece of kapa following their activity.
All demonstrations will be in the Kamani Grove, behind the Hawaiian Reef Exhibit/near the Keiki Playground. Mark your calendars:

I enjoy the process of glassing these found objects to build a canvas the same way a laminator would glass a foam blank to build a surfboard. My work includes these resin pieces as well as pen and ink illustrations and collage influenced by the beautiful place we get to call home."
